Quiet Moments With God -- Caterpillars & Butterflies

Today’s blog title is Quiet moments with God. When I think about these special times with my Lord, I usually envision a devotional time—Bible Study, prayer or worship. But that’s a narrow perspective.

All of creation is formed by the very hand of my Heavenly Father. He means for you and I to enjoy all that He has made.

A couple days ago my daughter, Sarah, and I and her three children piled into the car for an adventure. We headed for a Butterfly Park not far from our home. We found all sorts of exhibits. There was a butterfly pavilion with the winged beauties where we discovered newly laid eggs on the leaves of some of the plants. There were baby caterpillars. I’d never considered a caterpillar as being cute, but these were. There were also cocoons, but none were ready to reveal the finery hidden inside. If we want to see that miracle we’ll have to go back.

My grandchildren studied butterflies and bees, gathered special stones, and talked about the wonders of the universe as we strolled through stunning gardens. I watched and laughed as they rolled down grassy hillsides, galloped through forested trails and climbed sculptures. My daughter laid down in the sweet smelling grass and the children piled on, then decided it would be fun if grandma took pictures of them pretending to sleep or playing dead. We laughed ourselves silly.

Although it was a day filled with activities it was definitely a quiet moment with God--precious time spent with the ones I love. Memories are now tucked away in my mind to be recalled again and again. Days like these are special reminders of the treasures of life, offered up by the God of the universe and made possible only because of Him. They are gifts to be opened, enjoyed and treasured.

Grace and peace to you from God.

Tips For Triumphant Living -- Treasure Hunting

I remember the first time I read Proverbs 2:1-5. It gave me a different perspective on God’s Word. It says, "My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God."

Sounds like a treasure hunt to me. What fun! But this is no ordinary treasure hunt. Rather, we have the ability to discover the knowledge of God! Amazing! One catch—we need to search for it. And it can't be a halfhearted investigation; it must be an intense pursuit.

If a close friend we trust and admire came to our door and told us that she has absolute proof that treasure has been buried in our back yard, we’d listen wouldn’t we? We’d head straight for the shed, grab a shovel and start digging.

Why then when we’re offered an incredible treasure--the knowledge of God—do we put off reading His Word, glance at it casually, even refuse to study it? There’s treasure to be had, but evidently we don’t believe it. I can think of no other explanation. Possibly we haven’t looked at it from God's perspective.

I’m convinced that if God said it, then it’s true. Imagine what our lives could be like if we fully grasped this basic truth. We’d be rich . . . in what truly matters. We’d possess wisdom, understanding of the Lord and the knowledge of God. Life would take on a whole new tenor.

I’m going on a treasure hunt. How about you?

Grace and peace to you from God.

Quiet Moments With Him -- Remain in Him

Oswald Chambers words in his book, My Utmost for His Highest, never cease to help me see truth. One entry says this, “Jesus never hurried through certain villages where He was persecuted or lingered in others where He was blessed. Neither gratitude nor ingratitude turned our Lord even the slightest degree away from His purpose to go up to Jerusalem.”

I read this and clearly saw that I’m so not like Christ. I enjoy lingering in the blessings. And I hurry through pain. And I definitely do not like spending time with people who throw stones.

It’s easy to lose sight of the Lord's purpose. There are more comfortable paths to walk. And while in the midst of suffering we often forget that momentary pain can bring blessing--if not to us then to others. Our personal dreams and desires should not motivate us one way or the other. We should care only about being smack dab in the middle of God’s will. That’s where we belong. That's where we'll find genuine reward.

His purpose may line up with our own hopes and dreams, but even when they don’t His ways are the only ones that truly matter. Remain in Him. He has you right where you belong at this moment. We are where we are for a reason. So even if it's difficult, lean hard on Him. He'll hold you up.

Grace and peace to you from God.

Quiet Moments With God -- Dry Bones?

For several months I’ve been pushing my way through what’s felt like a marathon. I had a book due, there were several speeches to present, appearances to make, and interviews to give. Plus, there’s life. Sometimes it felt as if I were approaching the finish line, but didn’t have the strength to carry through. I’m certain God carried me the last month.

Three weeks ago my rest began. The first week off I was so exhausted that no matter how much I tried to relax it didn’t feel like rest. My adrenaline was still going. The following week the effects of pushing too hard for too long set in. Ouch!

I’m in the midst of my third week of rest and only now am beginning to feel more clear headed and the pain in my body is slowly dissipating. I'm praising God for that.

Today when I came across Ezekiel 37:1 – 14 I felt as if God were speaking directly to me. I’ve been feeling like dry bones. I failed to listen to God and the plans He intended for me. Instead I chose my own course and paid a price. I’m thankful God is merciful and patient.

He does not give up on us. In the thirty-seventh chapter of Ezekiel, the Lord asks Ezekiel, “Son of man, can these bones become living people again?” Ezekiel replied, “You alone know the answer to that.”

The bones represented Israel who said, “We have become old, dry bones—all hope is gone. Our nation is finished.”

God put those bones back together, covered them with flesh and muscle and breathed life into them. He can do that, for you and me. Our dry bones can be made new and vibrant. But if that’s to happen God must be first in our life. When He speaks we need to listen and then obey.

It hurts a bit to have your bones put back together and the flesh and muscle put back on, but the breath of life, well that’s pure joy. I’m resting in the Lord now, breathing in God’s fragrance and looking forward to HIS plans for me. I pray I listen well this time.

God's plans are the only ones we should pursue. When we do, walking with Him is a delight.

Grace and peace to you from God.

Tips For Triumphant Living -- The Mountain is Out

In the state of Washington in the Enumclaw area there is a saying, "The Mountain is out." All those living on the plateau know when someone says this it means Mount Rainier is visible, which also includes clear skies and sunhine. In the spring this is a special event. I know, I grew up in the rainy northwest.

On Saturday, May 16th, it was a gloriously beautiful day. My friend Ann Shorey and I were driving from our hotel to Enumclaw when I said, "Uh oh, the mountain is out."

So, why would that be a problem for two visiting authors? After a long, wet winter locals do anything but stay indoors when the skies turn blue and the sun warms the earth. And Ann and I were on our way to the Salt Shaker Bookstore to teach two writing workshops and sign copies of our most recent releases along with local author Susan Marlow. Conditions meant turn out would likely be low. After all, The Mountain was out.

The Salt Shaker Bookstore is a first-rate store that specializes in Christian books and gifts. They also serve coffee and goodies. I think it's a terrific place to spend a day.

As it turned out, on the 16th I was one of the few who felt that way. We had only one attendee for our workshops. Two of the store employees graciously joined the class and of course Ann and I took part when the other was speaking. I suppose the natural inclination is to see the event as a flop, but not so.

God knew what He was up to. He had a plan and May 16th belonged to Him. It was a delightful day. Our one attendee, Judy Gann, is a non-fiction author who has just begun her journey into fiction writing. She was happy to be there and ready to learn. Ann and I enjoyed her company immensely. We were both touched by the store employees who sat in on our classes. The folks at the Salt Shaker are super nice people. Throughout the day there were unexpected visits from special friends and readers. And I was especially surprised by a visit from my Junior High principal, Charles Wilson. What a special treat.

May 16th in Enumclaw is the day, in my history, that I taught my smallest class ever(thus far), but it will also be remembered as an absolutely lovely day filled with unexpected blessings. It definitely was NOT a flop. And I was especially happy to be in Enumclaw on a day when The Mountain was out. :-)

Praising God for His blessings!

Grace and peace to you from God.

Quiet Moments With God -- Hurrying Through Life?

Lately, I’ve been in a hurry. I have a new book launching and another one due at the publisher’s. There is so much to do and little time for pleasures or rest. I long to tarry, to drink in life’s abundance, and to linger even in its sorrows. We need to linger, to think and explore.

Not so long ago, a dear friend of mine was going through the worst kind of heartbreak. To help her cope, the doctor put her on an antidepressant. At the time they were needed, but the medication hindered her ability to grieve. She couldn’t even cry. She needed to experience her grief, to mourn. So she chose to discontinue her medication and the tears came and the healing began. She needed to linger in her sorrow.

This morning while reading from My Utmost for His Highest these words leaped out at me from the page. “If we will take this view, life will become one great romance—a glorious opportunity of seeing wonderful things all the time.”

Life a romance? Seeing wonderful things ALL the time? YES!

Life is a mix of mountain tops and valleys, but there is beauty in it all. God has so much to show us. Most importantly we’re to know Him. Experiencing life introduces us to God. He reveals Himself in creation, through the people who come and go, and in the midst of life’s adventures we will find Him.

Stop and look. Savor what comes your way. Time can be a gift or a thief. Which will it be for you?

Grace and peace to you from God.

Quiet Moments With God -- Sisters

My sister, is visiting from Alaska. She moved away several months ago, and I’ve missed her terribly. It’s wonderful to have her here. However, there just doesn’t seem to be enough time for chatting. It’s amazing that we can pick up right where we left off, as if she’s still just living down the hill. But, that’s how it is with family.

I love my sis, but I have lots of sisters—sisters in the faith. I love them too.

I spoke at a retreat over the weekend and stepped into a roomful of women I’d never met. But they weren’t strangers. I immediately felt a bond of love with the ladies at the First Christian Church in Roseburg. They were gracious and kind of course, but what I experienced was more than just becoming acquainted with some very nice ladies. They were family.

God’s children are all related. We share the same father, our Heavenly Father. We belong to Him and to each other. No matter where we go on this earth when we find a brother or sister in Christ we are instantly bonded. Knowing I’m never alone gives me peace and assurance.

The more I step out into the world the more I realize how big my family is. No matter how long or how briefly we’ve known each other, we’re connected. We’re part of one another and are meant to experience life together. It’s always a treat to discover more of my warmhearted sisters who make me feel loved and cared for.

God knows and understands us so well. We need each other. How like Him to offer us exactly what we need.

John 13:34 – 35 says, “A new command I give you; Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

I love that! They will know us by our love.

Make sure to treat each other with kindness and respect. Love as God tells us to. And if you haven’t done so recently, take a close look at your Christian family and remember to pray for them and to let them know how much you care about them.

And thanks so much to the women of First Christian Church for blessing me this past weekend. You ladies are very special.

Grace and peace to you from God.

Quiet Moments With God -- Just As We Are.

I figure by now most of you know who Susan Boyle is. She’s the new singing sensation in England, and rightly so. I was reading a commentary about Susan and was shocked when the writer referred to her as homely. EXCUSE ME! I think she looks more “homey”, friendly, natural. And I’d add that she seems interesting and spunky.

Why even mention her appearance? As usual humans are getting it wrong. We look at the outside appearance. Shouldn’t we know by now that you truly cannot judge a book by its cover? But alas, some things never change, and it’s soooo unfair. When we make judgments on appearance and other superficial qualities we miss out.

What do you think God sees when He looks at Susan? Scripture says He looks upon the heart. I don’t know Miss Boyle, but when I see her verve, courage and talent my guess is that the inside is pretty spectacular. After all, she is God’s creation. And He knew what He was doing when He fashioned her forty-seven years ago.

Susan Boyle blesses me. When I watch her sing, I want to cry. She has a fabulous voice and a genuine, straightforward persona I admire. I thank God for creating her with a voice that soothes the soul.

He’s created us as well, with a special purpose, each with unique gifts. Let’s not shut ourselves down or others because of incorrect judgments. God loves us just as we are. So, let’s love one another as He’s commanded and lift one another up.

Grace and peace to you from God.

America Not a Christian Nation -- You Sure?

I received a letter from my dear friend, Jeannie St. John Taylor. What she says is important. With her permission I'm posting her letter.

Grace & peace to you from God.

Bonnie

© Jeannie St. John Taylor

On a recent trip to Turkey our president announced to the world that the United States of America is not a Christian nation.

I vehemently reject that statement!

Government statistics show that 81 percent of Americans identify themselves with a specific religion and by far the largest number -- a full 76.5 percent – call themselves Christian. The next two faith groups don’t even come close in number; Jews compose 1.3 percent of the population and Muslims 0.5.

How could anyone classify our nation as not-Christian?

I fear that if we let the assertion that the United States is a non-Christian nation stand unchallenged, the lie will eventually become truth. It’s a principle explained by Robert King Merton: "Beliefs or expectations, whether true or not, affect the outcome of a situation or the way a person or group will behave. "

Spoken words and thoughts can become self-fulfilling prophecy. If we allow ourselves to think of the United States as non-Christian, that is precisely what it will become.

Our roots are Christian. The earliest settlers braved dangers at sea and on land for the express purpose of establishing a nation on biblical principles. Later Godly men framed our Constitution on Judeo/Christian values.

Sadly, the number of people who claim Christianity has dropped from 86 percent in 1990 to the current 76.5 per cent. Even so, the vast majority of Americans continue to be ardently Christian.
There is no reason to give up and wring our hands with grief! Will we allow our president’s comment to become a self-fulfilling prophecy?

NEVER! I refuse to relinquish my heritage! I choose to openly and fervently declare that America is still, and will continue to be, a Christian nation!

Together, with God’s help, you and I can reverse our nation’s decline! We must pray for our nation and stand boldly and openly for the Lord together. Will you stand with me? There is strength in numbers. Will you determine to stop this false perception with repentance and prayer? No one else will do it, but you and I can. We are not powerless.

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sin and heal their land.” 1 Chron. 7:14."

Together we stand. Together we openly declare: we are a Christian nation.

Quiet Moments With God -- Who Carries the Burden?

I have a book launching in two weeks, which means life is busy—too busy. There is always so much to do when a book hits the store shelves. Readers need to be notified, I stop in at book stores to sign copies of my books, plus teach writing workshops and do a little extra speaking. All of this means lots of work—publicity, speech writing, workshops that need polishing and a lot more. Presently, I’m also working toward a deadline on a new book.

I’m not complaining. I love my job. However, I’m getting a bit weary. I’m feeling buried beneath my work load. I’ve been in this place before. Each time I tell myself it won’t happen again. So . . . why is it that I’m here again?

There are lots of answers to that question, but right now looking at them won’t help (that’s for later). I need a plan, or inspiration, or just a cool head before moving forward. I’ve been praying for guidance and support from God. Interestingly this morning when I opened my devotional, my mind was on my “burden”. When my eyes went to the topic of the day I had to giggle. God always knows what I need.

The devotional title was, “What to do when your burden is overwhelming?” I read on, gobbling down Oswald Chambers insights into God’s Word.

His first statement sent a question rambling through my mind. He said, “We must recognize the difference between burdens that are right for us to bear and burdens that are wrong.” This sent me into prayer mode. I know the obvious burdens that are my own doing, and I know some of the one’s placed upon me by God. However, there are some I’m uncertain about. Their origin and matter of importance are about as clear as a foggy winter night. I’m definitely taking these to the Lord and trusting Him to blow away the mist.

The next quandary laid before me came from the following statement, “Cast your burden on the Lord.” I want to do that, but I’m having difficulty accomplishing it. I pray and hand it off to him, but still feel the pressure and stress of my circumstances, which tells me I haven’t really handed it to Him.

I’d love to hear from some of you. What have you discovered about managing or releasing burdens God has not placed in your life? In addition could you share your insights and experiences with us on how you successfully cast Godly burdens onto the Lord’s shoulders, therefore making your tasks less stressful and more fun?

We can be of help to one another. Scripture says we’re to help carry one another’s burdens. I’d love to hear some of your insights and experiences.

Grace and peace to you from God.

Tips For Triumphant Living -- Cut That Out

I hear God telling me, “Bonnie, just cut it out.” Does God talk like that? I don’t know but that’s what I heard from Him this morning. Clearly, I have choices.

Today is Good Friday and it’s interesting that my Bible time and devotional time both pointed me to the same issue—sin. I’ve got plenty. And I’m a repeat offender. Sigh.

As I think about Christ going to the cross on my behalf and my feeble attempts at reigning in destructive sin patterns I just shake my head and wonder why. He gave me everything. I want His will to be my will and yet I fall so short. “Lord, forgive me.”

Matthew 5:29 is pretty straight forward about this sin issue. It says, So if your eye—even your good eye—causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

We know Jesus isn’t speaking figuratively, but that doesn’t lessen the point. We tolerate sins that have the power to destroy us. How much better it would be to get rid of them. Why don’t we?

I’m grateful God is merciful and patient, but that does not mean He will spare me from the consequences of my sins. So, as I consider the sacrifice made on my behalf, on all our behalf’s, I mean to spend time talking with God about my bad behavior. He has the answers. I need to listen and then obey. If I’m to glorify Him I need to decide whether or not I’m going to submit to Him, completely—all of me.

How about you?

Grace and peace to you from God.

Quiet Moments With God -- House Training

I have a new puppy name Maggie. I’m not so sure getting a puppy was a good idea, but she is sooo cute and sweet. She also loves to chew on anything and everything. She whines sometimes during the middle of the night, doesn’t come when she’s called, and potties anywhere she happens to be when the urge strikes her. And she’s perfectly content to remain just as she is.

While working to shape this young pup into a sociable house pet I’ve been reminded that training can be difficult and learning to be obedient does not necessarily come naturally. Sometimes I'm frustrated with my new pup. Mostly because she doesn’t want to learn or simply doesn’t understand the concepts I’m trying to teach her. I figured she’d get “it” by now. After all, I’ve been consistent, clear in my instructions and I’ve continued to lavish her with love.

It dawned on me—I’m not so different from Maggie. I don’t always listen and I can be stubborn. Yet, God patiently teaches and guides, and gently walks me through the process of learning again and again. Even though I sometimes do exactly the opposite of what He wants me to do, He loves me anyway.

When I realized the similarities I immediately asked God to forgive me for my obstinance and my inability to maintain focus. Like Maggie I want things my own way and often push through to achieve my own goals. How blessed I am to have a Lord who is patient and merciful. He doesn’t give up on me.

I’m certain that eventually Maggie will understand household rules, and she’ll do well. That doesn’t mean she’ll be a “perfect” dog. There is no such thing. And, though she's imperfect, I’m confident our relationship will grow and we’ll become buddies. I’ll love her, even when she makes mistakes. But she'll love me better. One of the most beautiful things about dogs is they love unconditionally. Perhaps I have a thing or two to learn from Maggie.

God uses all kinds of tools to teach, if we'll only listen and learn.

Grace and peace to you from God.

Tips For Triumphant Living -- Captive Thoughts

Wisdom can come from unexpected places. Sometimes I think believers shut out insights from all sources except that of other believers. I know that what I’m about to say may frighten some of you, but I feel compelled to speak out.

I’m like most you. The words of knowledge and good sense I trust most come from God’s people. That’s not a bad thing. However, there’s a lot of wisdom in this world that does not come from the mouths of Christians.

I was reminded of this recently while speaking to my acupuncturist. I don’t know her religious background, but she possesses wisdom and shares insightful thoughts. At each session we talk first (before the needles) and she helps me sort out some of the “stuff” going on in my life. She believes that mind, spirit, and body are all interconnected. I agree.

At my last visit we talked about our thoughts and taking them captive. I was reminded of 2nd Corinthians 10:4-5, which says, "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

When I walked out of the acupuncturist’s office this scripture rolled through my mind. She hadn’t quoted it, but that’s what I got out of our gab session. Our mind must be brought under Christ’s control. We too often allow our thoughts to wander into unhealthy places that tell us life is too bleak, too difficult or just too painful. Or they settle and then dwell on some negative aspect in our lives. If we remain in those dark places we’ll likely be defeated. Paul, the author of 2nd Corinthians, knew well the power of the mind and he understood that our battle is not against this world but against principalities and powers. We must hold tightly to the shield of faith and take up the sword of the spirit if we are to win.

I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to begin taking charge over your thoughts. The verse says WE take captive EVERY thought. Sometimes negatives creep in unknown, but usually we’re well aware of what mental corruption we entertain. So, the next time instead of allowing an unhealthy thought to reside, get hold of it, wrangle it to the ground and take it to Christ. Ask the Lord what He wants you to be thinking about. Philippians 4:8 – 9 is a great place to start. It has some very good ideas.

Grace and peace to you from God.

Tips For Triumphant Living -- Invest in Others

I spoke at a women’s retreat a while back and during the weekend I was showered with gifts and notes from the ladies. After I returned home, I sat down and read through all the notes. One statement especially touched me. “Thank you for investing yourself in us.”

This went straight to my heart. Sometimes as I plow through hours of preparation to speak or teach I feel guilty about the time taken from my family, my friends, my church and my personal time. I grouse about it. Even while reading scripture and working through insights and gaining knowledge so I can share with others, I sometimes complain. Why would I do that? It can be boiled down to one word—selfishness.

This woman’s note makes me cry. I’m grateful for the privilege of sharing Christ and His truths, and I’m ashamed of my own selfish heart.

God offered His son. Christ gave everything for me and for you. Sharing our gifts with others is not asking too much. In fact, when we give we receive. Spending time with other Christians, learning God’s Word, leaning on Him, being a voice for Him—all of these are gifts. All he wants us to do is to pass them on.

I pray that as I learn to listen to God's voice my selfish voice will be quiet. May I hear Him above all else, above every selfish need. May we all hear. Only then shall we know the privilege of investing in others.

Grace and peace to you in Christ.

Quite Moments With God -- Love Your Enemy

When we're treated unjustly or betrayed it hurts. It’s especially painful when the treachery comes from family or a close friend or a fellow Christian. I’ve been there. I’m there now. And I'm certain these feelings of betrayal will be part of my future. I know because even the best people can be thoughtless and unkind sometimes.

When we’re wounded by someone who ought to love us, what should we do? Strike back? Withdraw? Get angry or bitter? Never trust again?

The response God asks of us is to love . . . even our enemies. Not easy to do, but He’s clear about this. In Luke 6:32-36 we're told, “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Convicting words. When I consider Christ on the cross, praying for mercy for those who cursed him—loving them and dying for them, I know what I must do. I must love. Is it easy? No. Is it spontaneous? Sometimes. Is it possible? Yes. God makes all things possible.

Allow the Lord to open your hearts. Love one another, forgive one another, be merciful to each other. Christ is our example. May His way be our way.

Trust in Him and He will create a new heart in you.

Grace and peace to you from God.

Quiet Moments With God -- As Little Children

I often stand on my deck and look toward the back of our property where my mother-in-law used to live. I miss her. Verna shared our lives for many years and went to live in heaven five years ago. She was a special woman.

One of the things I loved most about her was her childlike heart. Matthew 18:2 – 3 says, He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Verna was no Bible Scholar, but she loved and trusted her Lord. She knew hardship and sorrow, yet never lost her love and trust of others. Although she sometimes displayed a crusty exterior her heart remained tender.

The day she died, she’d been gardening and was found lying among her flowers, looking as if she’d lain down to take a nap. In the end there’d been no struggle, only childlike faith.

All these years later, I catch glimpses of the kind and loving woman who simply believed and trusted. I can see her being caught into our Lord’s arms where He held her close. Verna's uncomplicated faith reminds me of what Jesus asked of all of us. We don’t need to be theologians, we simply need to believe.

Grace and peace to you from God.

Quiet Moments With God -- Sisters

I just received this photo and memories flooded me. These are fabulous women! I can't wait for heaven when we'll have eternity to chat together, pray together, and praise the Lord together.

Many months ago I was asked to speak for the Wapato Valley Baptist Church. As I drove to the coast last weekend I listened to worship music and prayed. I felt the Holy Spirit nudge me, telling me that I'd been chosen for this time, this place and this topic. I felt humbled and honored. I had little idea, however, that although I was the "teacher" God had a lot for ME to learn.

When I arrived at the beach house in Lincoln City I was thrilled. It was absolutely beautiful! And the team of ladies who met me there immediately felt like family. I knew it was going to be a great weekend.

By the time the rest of the women from Wapato Valley Baptist began arriving my back was having a hayday. I have a bad back, and it flairs up from time-to-time. Interestingly it chose this weekend to get cranky. In spite of it, God saw me through and I was able to fulfill my "obligation".

I watched the ladies love and care for each other, and they didn't forget to have a lot of fun as well. And through my pain I was introduced to the beauty of the women of this church. These lovely ladies prayed for me, cared for me and spent time with me. Although my body was hurting my spirit was being nourished.

In the months prior to the retreat, as I prepared to teach about Living Without Masks, I was challenged. As I studied and worked through scriptures I learned so much, and then when I shared with the women during the retreat God spoke to me. By the end of the weekend, He'd given me a glimpse of His plans for me and revealed a mask I had no idea I'd been wearing. I must say, I was stunned at the revelation. I'm in process on this one, but I'm excited to discover what God has in store for me.

We serve a great God. He doesn't miss anything and He knows what each of us needs in order to grow and mature so we can better serve one another. I thank Him for his love and grace, especially that which was so beautifully demonstrated through His servants.

I'm always amazed at how God can take a group of His children, throw them together and make a family. The ladies of the Wapato Valley Church are my forever family.

God uses people and circumstances to cause change in us. May we all open our eyes and our hearts to Him and discover a deeper, richer relationship with our Lord and with others.

Grace and peace to you from God.

Bonnie
